Tips for Storing Pecans...

According to the National Pecan Shellers Association website (www.ilovepecans.org) here are a few tips for storing pecans...

- Shelled Pecans can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 9 months and in the freezer for up to 2 years.
- Pecans be thawed and refrozen repeatedly during a 2 year period without loss of flavor or texture.
- Airtight containers are best for storing pecans in the refrigerator or freezer. (Pecans can easily absorb odors.)
- After removal from cold storage, pecans will stay good for an additional 2 months.

In the Shell and Cracked Pecans...

I am sorry to inform everyone that we are now sold out of in the shell and cracked pecans. We will not have any more until the 2010 harvest which will be in late October or early November.

We do still have shelled pecan halves and pieces available! We ship shelled pecans all year.

Pecan Pieces on SALE...

Everyone loves a good sale and everyone loves pecan pieces so we have combined the two! Right now we are offering all our pieces at a reduced price. We have chopped pieces available in either large, medium or small piece sizes and we also have unchopped pieces (which is just a mixture of sizes).

A 1-pound bag is $7.95 (originally $8.50) and a 4-pound bag is $29.75 (originally $31.95). We are also offering our large chopped pieces at a reduced wholesale price. A 30-pound case is $144.00 ($4.80 per pound). This sale will not last forever so hurry in or place your order today!

Pecan pieces are great for baking, on salads, or mixed in cereal and yogurt. They also make wonderful toppings for ice cream. Add a little crunch and a healthy handful to all your meals!

For more information on the health benefits of pecans visit www.ilovepecans.org and click on the "Nutrition in a Nutshell" link on the left side of the page.

Last Day...

Today, Saturday March 13th, is the last day we are buying pecans from the public. During normal pecan seasons we would have stopped some time in February, but this pecan season has been anything but normal.

This year the pecans did not fall as early as they typically do (usually it begins around the end of October to middle of November and the pecans are usually all off the trees by January) and while many people still say they have some pecans left in their trees these pecans are probably not filled out very well. The weird season coupled with lots of snow and rain have made harvesting quite a chore this year for everyone!

We buy pecans from the public beginning each November and we end (usually) some time in February. All the pecans we buy from the public are shipped to shelling companies either here in the States or some this year went to China. Nothing that we buy is sold at our retail store. All the pecans we retail (and that are in our delicious homemade fudge) come from our 8,000 tree Montz Home Orchard located in Charlie, TX.

In order for us to buy pecans they must be from the most recent season, filled out well, have no holes in them, cannot be cracked or shelled, and cannot have debris in them such as sticks, rocks, leaves, or lots of dirt. They also must be dry (we cannot buy wet pecans because they will mold). Thus, if you are unable to get all your pecans sold from this year we cannot buy them when we start again in November 2010. Sorry!

We do offer custom cracking year round. The cost for this is $0.40 per pound.

Questions Answered...

Recently I was asked to give some details about some of the previous posts so here you go...

The Texas Pecan Growers Association's Annual Conference will be in San Marcos, TX at the Embassy Suites July 11-14, 2010. For more information visit TPGA's website at www.tpga.org or give them a call at 979-846-3285. Cindy or Blair will be happy to help you out with more details.

As for the Charlie Pecan Festival I am not sure of those dates yet. The Festival is usually in November. When I get more details I will pass them on.

Now for product questions...

Our Fudge Dipped Strawberries are still available but time is running out. We hope to have them through March and April but it all depends on how well the strawberries hold up! Every Saturday while we have them we have "Super Sweet Saturdays"! On these days we have Fudge Dipped Strawberries available during the day. Other than Saturdays, we just need a 30 minute notice to have the strawberries ready. The cost is $18.95 per dozen.

The Texas Waffle Maker is $59.95. The Southern Pecan and the Texas Buttermilk Waffle Mixes are both $7.95 each. The Toasted Pecan Syrup is $5.95.

Thanks for all the questions! Keep them coming. We love to hear from our customers, family, and friends!
